How to Play Oz Lotto

Oz Lotto is very simple to play: pick seven numbers between 1 and 47 and win by matching them with the numbers drawn. You can choose from several different entry types, including System and Pick entries.

You can enter Oz Lotto at one of the thousands of lottery retailers situated across Australia – sales close at 7.30pm every Tuesday. The draw then takes place and sales reopen shortly afterwards. Pick up an Oz Lotto playslip and choose from one of the following entry types:

Standard Entry

To play a standard entry - known as a ‘Marked’ entry in some territories - pick seven numbers between 1 and 47. Every game panel on the playslip is one separate entry so just fill in as many panels as you want to play. Each standard entry costs $1.50.

QuickPick / SlikPik

As an alternative to picking your own numbers you can ask for a QuickPick – known as a SlikPik in Western Australia – to receive a randomly generated set. Just choose how many panels you want to play and you will receive that many entries. You can also use our Number Generator to get random sets.

System Entry

With a System entry you pick eight or more numbers and then play every seven-number combination within your chosen range as a separate entry. Pick between eight and 20 numbers on your playslip and mark the ‘System/Pick’ box – note that the cost increases the more numbers you pick.

For example, if you play a System 8 and pick the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, you would play eight separate games as there are that many seven-number combinations within that range. (View examples below)

Pick Entry

To play a Pick 6 entry, choose six numbers and mark the ‘System/Pick’ box. Your six numbers will then be accompanied by each of the remaining numbers, giving you a total of 41 games but guaranteeing that you match at least one number. A Pick 5 entry works exactly the same way, except you pick just five numbers on your playslip and then two other numbers are required to complete your line. You would play 861 games with a Pick 5 entry to guarantee you two numbers.

Syndicates

You can either set up your own syndicate with friends, family, or work colleagues, or you can join a syndicate already set up in-store. If you set up your own syndicate you simply need to purchase the tickets – you can choose from any of the entry types above. Alternatively, ask the retailer to join a pre-arranged syndicate and they will do the hard work for you. Go to the Syndicates page if you want to find out more about playing Oz Lotto with others.

Play 3: 1 2 3 4 5 7 8
Play 4: 1 2 3 4 6 7 8
Play 5: 1 2 3 5 6 7 8
Play 6: 1 2 4 5 6 7 8
Play 7: 1 3 4 5 6 7 8

System Entry Overall Costs

With a System 9 you would play 36 games, while a System 10 would mean 120 games, and so on right up to a System 20, which has 77,520. The table below shows how many games you would play and the overall cost for each type of System:

System Games Total Cost
System 8 8 $11.70
System 9 36 $52.60
System 10 120 $175.20
System 11 330 $481.75
System 12 792 $1,156.25
System 13 1,716 $2,505.20
System 14 3,432 $5,010.40
System 15 6,435 $9,394.45
System 16 11,440 $16,701.25
System 17 19,448 $28,392.15
System 18 31,824 $46,459.85
System 19 50,388 $73,561.45
System 20 77,520 $113,171.45

The biggest benefit of System entries is that if you do hit your numbers, you can win with multiple numbers. For example, if you play a System 10 entry and hit all seven Oz Lotto numbers, not only would you win the Division 1 prize with one of your games, you would also win over 100 prizes in other divisions.

How to Win Oz Lotto

The aim of Oz Lotto is to match as many of your numbers as possible with the winning numbers in the draw(s) you entered. The more numbers you match, the bigger your prize.

Seven balls numbered between 1 and 47 are randomly selected as the winners in every Oz Lotto draw. They are followed by three further supplementary numbers, which are drawn from the remaining pool of 40 balls. These ten numbers – the seven main ones and the three supplementary ones – constitute the winning Oz Lotto numbers.

You can match the winning numbers in any order – you don’t have to match them in the exact order they are drawn. Go to the Dividends page to find out what you can win and the odds of winning in each prize division.

There are no tricks to winning Oz Lotto - every single entry has an identical chance of winning. However, you can boost your chances by submitting more entries, whether that is by playing in a syndicate or opting for a System or Pick entry. Make sure to get your entries in before the cut-off time and keep your tickets safe until you have checked them.
