A lucky man from Sydney was so shocked to be told that he had won $50 million in Thursday’s Powerball draw that he asked the NSW Lotteries representative on the other end of the phone whether he should ‘call his mum’ or ‘hug his wife’. The money will sort out his financial worries after he was recently made unemployed, and he hopes he can now make a difference to people’s lives.
The numbers drawn were 10, 19, 21, 23, 26 and 36, with Powerball 10, creating 868,162 prize winners altogether. There was only one successful player in the First Division, and he admitted after being contacted about the win that he ‘did not even know how many zeros are in $50 million’, saying that he thought someone was playing a joke on him when he was contacted soon after the draw.
"No. No. No. Don't tell me that. Are you serious man? I'll probably faint," the man said to the caller, according to NSW Lotteries. “I don't know what to do. What should I do now? Should I call my mum? Should I hug my wife? What do I do?"
The man, who has decided to stay anonymous, has been out of work since the end of last year and had been discussing his plans for the future with his wife when the phone rang with the life-changing news. He has described the win as a ‘blessing’, and is now keen to spread a little of the good fortune that has come his way.
“I want to open a restaurant - that’s my passion - and give 50 per cent of the food away for free to people who need it. I don’t need profits, but there are homeless, students who are struggling, and people in need,” he said.
As the Powerball jackpot resets to $3 million for the next draw, Australian lottery fans can take their pick from several games for the chance to win huge prizes. Numbers can be selected online or from authorised retailers in Australia.
