Two Winners of $80 Million Oz Lotto Jackpot
Last Updated: Tuesday 25th June 2019, 15:39 pm
One of Australia’s biggest jackpots of all time was won on Tuesday night as two lucky ticket holders matched all the Oz Lotto numbers to split a division one prize of $80 million. Both of the winners are from Queensland and are already thinking about what they can do with the money.
The winning numbers for the draw on Tuesday 25th June were 14, 19, 25, 29, 35, 36 and 42, with supplementary numbers 1 and 13. Following eight consecutive weeks without a winner, the division one prize had jumped to its highest amount since 2012 and it was estimated that at least a quarter of Australian adults might buy tickets.
The surge in interest resulted in more than 1.4 million prizes being won, with two players matching all seven main numbers to bank $40 million each. Both winners were informed of the news shortly after the draw and were stunned to discover what had just happened.
Ipswich Winner Didn’t Realise She’d Won Millions
One of the winners, a mother from Ipswich, had played online and checked her ticket before she had even been contacted by lottery officials, but she had no idea how much she had won. “I was thinking I would have won a couple of thousand. I just kept thinking ‘That can’t be real. That must be a mistake’. It’s just so weird to think I am a multi-millionaire.”
The woman admitted that it would be difficult to sleep straight after being given such good news and she planned to have a couple of drinks to celebrate. Looking further ahead, she said she had a few ideas but would try to carry on leading a normal life.
She said: “I don’t think much will change. Tomorrow will just be the same old thing. I’ve still got to do the school drop off. I just don’t know. I just can’t think. I never thought I’d win the lottery! Oh my god, I can’t believe this. I just can’t. It’s very surreal. We’ve always wanted to go on a family holiday to Canada, so we’ll do that. We’ll do everything! It will be absolutely life-changing!”
Sunshine Coast Winner Eyes Trip To Italy
The other winner was a man from the Sunshine Coast, who bought his ticket from NewsXpress Robina Town Centre on the Gold Coast. Like the lady from Ipswich, he told lottery officials that he would prefer to stay anonymous when he took the call.
Describing himself as ‘extremely excited and grateful’ as well as shocked, the man said: “It’s going to change my life a fair bit. I’ll think about it for a day or so, but the first thing I want to do is get a little house and upgrade the car. Probably do something like that - I might even buy a big house!”
The winner plans to carry on working but perhaps explore a new career that he is passionate about, while he also has his heart set on fulfilling a lifelong dream. “I’ve always wanted to go to the Italian Grand Prix,” he said. “It’s in September and by the looks of things I’ll be able to do that now. I’ll definitely be able to do that in style now.”
The owner of the NewsXpress Robina Town Centre, Karen Randall, was also delighted to hear that her store had sold the winning ticket. She said: “I am shocked, stunned and thrilled! The staff are going to go nuts when they hear. We wish him all the best with his prize and hope he enjoys it. We have sold division one winning tickets in the past but it’s been a long time between drinks and we’ve never had a prize this big.”
The Oz Lotto jackpot will now reset to $2 million for the next draw, but there are other big prizes up for grabs this week. Powerball is the largest of the lot at $40 million ahead of Thursday’s game. Check out the latest Australian Lottery Results after every draw this week.
