Sydney Dad Wins $40 Million Oz Lotto Jackpot

A father from Sydney has quickly come forward to claim Tuesday night’s $40 million Oz Lotto jackpot, revealing that he needed to look at his ticket a couple of times before he realised that he had won the top prize.
The lucky man matched the numbers 13, 15, 19, 24, 32, 37 and 45 on 6th August, putting an end to a run of five draws without a winner and landing one of the largest Oz Lotto jackpots of the year.
There were more than 630,000 prizes given away in total, but lottery officials initially had no idea who had won the jackpot as the entry was unregistered, so they had no way of getting in contact with the winner. All that was known was that the ticket was sold in New South Wales.
However, the winner did not wait long to get in touch, checking his entry late after the draw and then having a restless night before he made contact. “I haven’t slept at all,” he said. “There was no way I was sleeping last night after I checked my ticket.”
Reflecting on the moment when he discovered that he had won, the Sydney resident admitted that it did not instantly dawn on him just what had happened. “I saw that I had five of the seven winning numbers so I thought I’d probably won a prize,” he recalled. “But then I realised I had all seven winning numbers. I just couldn’t believe it. I don’t think I’ll be sleeping much tonight either.”
Lucky Store Does It Again
The man, who has decided to remain anonymous, bought his ticket at AK Newstalk, Shop 1004, 17 Patrick Street, Blacktown. He will now have to give some thought as to what he what he wants to do with his winnings, with so many possibilities for how to spend such a fortune.
“I still have no idea what I’ll do with the prize,” he said. “I’ve already popped open a bottle of champagne to celebrate. I’ll definitely be sharing it with my family. After that, who knows.”
The winner was also congratulated on his prize by Rohit Gupta, the owner of AK Newstalk. His store has sold a number of big winning tickets over the years, including a Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot entry worth $10 million back in 2015, but Gupta says it is always a special feeling when someone does so well.
“I’m over the moon just knowing my outlet has sold an entry worth $40 million,” said Gupta. “I couldn’t possibly imagine how our customer is feeling right now. It’s very exciting to know we have changed this man’s life in a big way. Congratulations to him and we hope he enjoys every second of his win.”
There have only been two bigger Oz Lotto jackpots given away in 2019 - $70 million in March and $80 million in June. On both of those occasions, though, there were multiple winners who shared the jackpot, so no single player has taken home a larger prize than the $40 million won by the dad from Sydney.
The top prize will now revert to $2 million for next Tuesday’s draw, while there are also big jackpots up for grabs throughout the week on Monday Lotto, Wednesday Lotto and Saturday Lotto, as well as the Powerball draw on Thursday and the daily Set For Life game.
