A man from Port Kemba in Illawarra has revealed that he had to convince his sister he was not playing an April Fool’s joke after winning an Oz Lotto jackpot worth $2.3 million.
The lucky player has been playing lotteries for more than 30 years but never imagined that he would win such a significant Division 1 prize.
He matched all the main numbers - 4, 7, 14, 15, 17, 23 and 43 - in the Oz Lotto draw on Tuesday, 29 March. His ticket, purchased at X-Tra Port News, 53 Wentworth Street, Port Kembla, was the only one in the whole of Australia to win in Division 1, leaving him with the full $2,370,328 payout to himself.
Recalling the moment he found out he had won, the man said: “A colleague called me and told me to check my ticket. He’d heard there had been a win in the area and said he had a good feeling about it.
“Once my boss and I saw that I had won, he gave me a huge hug.
“I called my sister straight away to tell her, and she said, ‘Yeah, okay mate, good joke, I guess April Fools’ Day has arrived early this year.’. It took a little while, but once she believed me, we both burst into tears.”
The winner can now look forward to a bright future with his newfound wealth, and is already thinking about what he might do with the money.
“This means so much to my family. We’re very close, and this will make a big difference for us,” he explained.
“I’ve been playing lotteries for more than 32 years, and I still can’t fathom the fact that I’ve won.”
“This win means we can finally make some home improvements, but who knows. I might just buy a new house.”
The Oz Lotto jackpot has now been won five times in 2022. The biggest prize of the lot was a $50 million jackpot that was split between two players back in January.
The Division 1 prize has now reset to $2 million ahead of the next draw. Keep an eye out for the winning numbers on the Oz Lotto Results page as soon as they are available.
