New South Wales Miner Wins $1 Million After Playing Lotto For 40 Years

Last Updated: Thursday 30 May 2019, 16:08 pm

Persistence has finally paid off for a Wednesday Lotto player from Broken Hill in New South Wales after he pocketed $1 million in the latest draw. The big winner has been a regular lottery player for 40 years, and has been working in the mines for even longer.

The winning numbers on Wednesday 29th May were 19, 21, 24, 26, 27 and 30, plus supplementary balls 40 and 45. There were three players across Australia who matched the six main numbers to become instant millionaires, and the miner from Broken Hill was stunned to find out from a New South Wales Lotteries official that he was one of the lucky winners.

“You beauty! My wife is chucking a fit over here,” he said. “On my way home from work I went in to the store to put on a ticket for tonight and when I scanned my player’s card they told me I’d won a prize over $1,000. I thought I’d better get home and check my tickets but I’ve only just got home after the night shift.”

Having worked as a miner for ‘about 43 years’, the player, who has decided to remain anonymous, thinks it might now be time to give up the job. He has never had too much luck in the past with his lottery numbers, but always kept believing.

“I’ve been playing Lotto for about 40 years I reckon,” he explained. “I have been playing those numbers for a long time. They are birthdays and other special dates. The most they have ever won me is $1,900 so this is a bit better than that!”

The winner joked that he still felt half asleep when he heard the news and that it could all be a dream, and that his only plan for a celebration was to try and get some sleep after his night shift. He had bought his ticket from South Newsagency on Patton Street in Broken Hill.

The other winning tickets for Wednesday’s draw were sold in Western Australia and Queensland. The entry from Western Australia was bought at Springs News in Bennett Springs, which extended a remarkable record for store owner Milan Vuletich.

He said: “We’ve sold three $1 million dollar tickets in just over a year now – with two in April and November last year and now, last night. We’re for sure in a lucky shopping centre. We’re pretty pleased with our track record and hope the good fortune helps one of our locals.”

The Queensland ticket belonged to a woman from Brisbane, who described it as an ‘incredible’ feeling when contacted by a Golden Casket official. She said she had been dreaming of receiving that phone call for years, and already had lots of ideas for the money.

“What aren’t I going to do?” she said. “Holidays! I love to travel! Maybe buy a nice little house by the beach. I can’t believe this is a reality now and I actually have to decide what to do with one million dollars. I think an early retirement could be on the cards! It would be great to even just work part-time!”

Wednesday Lotto draws take place every week at 10:30pm AEST, with $1 million up for grabs for anyone who matches all six main numbers. There are also five other ways to win in every draw.
