Monday Lotto Player Wins $1 Million After Holiday is Cancelled

Last Updated: Friday, 30 July 2021, 09:11am

A new millionaire from South Australia has noted how she should not have been in the country to buy her winning ticket. The Morphett Vale woman had booked a holiday to Europe but was forced to cancel due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving her free to take part in the Monday Lotto draw on 21 September.

She was one of two players - both from South Australia - to match the winning numbers of 1, 4, 8, 18, 22 and 35. Both ticket holders landed $1 million, while there were also more than 115,000 other prizes given away. Take a look at the Monday Lotto Results page for more information.

The lucky lady, who purchased her entry from Campbell’s Newsagency Morphett Vale, Shops 14 & 15, Southgate Plaza, Sherrifs Road, Morphett Vale, found out about the win straight away while she was watching television.

Speaking to a representative of lottery operator The Lott, she said: “I was sitting next to my hubby last night while he was watching the footy and I saw the winning numbers come up on the screen.

“I thought to myself ‘a few of those look familiar’ so I went to check my ticket. I saw that I had all of the winning numbers and I was screaming out to my husband ‘I’m a millionaire! I’ve just won $1 million!’. He thought I was just joking and got annoyed I was interrupting him watching the football.

“When I showed him we’d won he didn’t mind the interruption at all. We cracked open a bottle of champagne to celebrate.”

The winner realises that if the rest of the year had gone as planned, she would not have purchased her ticket because she would have been abroad. She is now looking forward to going on the trip they missed and travelling in style.

“We’d actually booked a trip to Europe, and we were supposed to be there now,” she explained. “But we had to cancel it due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s strange to think that if we had been in Europe, I wouldn’t have purchased this ticket and won $1 million.

“It’s safe to say when we do get to go to Europe we’ll be going business class for sure.”

As well as travelling, the woman intends to use the money for some home improvements. She also wants to help her family out and will think about when she might be able to retire.
