The hunt is on for a Powerball player from the northern suburbs of Melbourne after one lucky ticket holder snapped up Thursday night’s $55 million jackpot to become the game’s biggest winner in more than a year.
The Division One prize had been growing since $10.6 million was given away on 23rd November, and Powerball fans from all over Australia rushed out to buy tickets. The numbers drawn were 5, 7, 11, 32, 34 and 38, with Powerball 12, and over 1 million participants picked up prizes.
As well as the jackpot winner, there were 14 players who matched the six main numbers without the Powerball to net $86,113 each, while other prizes ranged from $13.20 for matching two main numbers plus the Powerball to $7,045 for matching five main numbers plus the Powerball. Only one player matched the full winning line, though, and it quickly emerged that the ticket had been sold in Victoria. Tatts Lotto later confirmed the lucky location as northern Melbourne, but said it had not been registered to an official playing card and, as such, the identity of the winner remained a mystery.
“We can’t wait to confirm the out-of-this-world prize with our mystery winner! Just imagine how $55 million might change your life and the lives of your nearest and dearest. There are 55 million reasons why all players in Melbourne’s northern suburbs who had an entry in last night’s draw should check their ticket this morning,” said Tatts spokesperson Bronnie Spencer.
Thursday’s success ranks as the joint-fourth largest prize ever given away on Powerball. The record dates back to July 2009, when two participants split $80 million, while the biggest prize ever claimed on a single ticket remains the $70 million won by a Hervey Bay couple in January 2016.
The last time a jackpot of this level was offered was back in January last year, when a 21-strong syndicate of Queensland work colleagues from the Department of Education also won $55 million.
As the wait for the latest winner to come forward continues, you can look forward to trying to win a Division One prize of $3 million in next week’s draw. There are also exciting prizes to be won in Saturday Lotto, Monday Lotto, Wednesday Lotto, Oz Lotto and Set For Life, so make sure to take part if you fancy winning. You can choose numbers online or go to authorised retailers in Australia. Good luck!
