A woman from Caloundra has become the first Powerball jackpot winner of the year after banking $60 million in the draw on Thursday 6 February. While she was shocked to be told of her newfound wealth, the lucky lady said there was ‘heaps of stuff’ she could do with the money.
The winning numbers were 1, 2, 3, 11, 15, 26 and 35, with a Powerball of 17. There were 1,493,633 prizes given away in total across the nine divisions, including the single entry from Queensland that matched the full winning line.
She had bought an eight-game Quick Pick ticket from Caloundra Newsagency, Shop 1, 72 Bullcock Street in Caloundra, and was contacted by lottery officials shortly after the draw with the news of her win. Her reaction was one of disbelief.
“Someone must be having me on,” she told The Lott. “I need to double check this is real. I’m not sure I believe you. It’s crazy. I still just can’t believe it. I’m speechless. I just don’t know what to say.
“I’m going to have to make sure this isn’t some weird dream. I’m going to go and check my ticket to make sure I have won and then I’ll be straight on my phone to my family to share the good news.”
The woman, who is a regular player, has decided to remain anonymous rather than reveal her identity. She is now looking forward to making lots of exciting plans for the future, including early retirement.
“There is heaps of stuff I can do with this win,” she enthused. “I just have to let it sink in and work out what to do with it, but it won’t be long before I have lots of things going on. I’ll probably be retiring early. I don’t think I’ll go back to work that’s for sure.”
“I’m definitely going to be spending tonight thinking about how to enjoy the prize and planning my celebrations.”
The Powerball jackpot had most recently been won in the final draw of 2019, when a ticket holder from Queensland landed $24 million on 26 December. There were five draws without a winner, before the jackpot rocketed from $40 million last week to $60 million in the latest draw.
It was a record-breaking year in 2019 as three players split $150 million - the largest jackpot ever seen on the game - in September. The first big win of 2020 has now arrived, and you can keep up to date with the latest results after every draw.
