A woman in her 20s has revealed she was left ‘shaking like a leaf’ after being informed that she was the winner of a $60 million Powerball jackpot. The lucky lady, from inner-city Sydney, matched all the numbers in the eagerly-anticipated draw on Thursday 17 September.
The winning numbers were 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 19 and 28, with a 6 as the Powerball. The huge Division 1 prize sparked a surge in ticket sales and more than 1.9 million players received awards in a very lucrative draw.
More than $93 million was paid out altogether, but the majority went to the woman from Sydney. In addition to landing the jackpot, her PowerHit entry also gave her 19 prizes in Division 2 - taking her total prize to $60,683,656.95.
Contacted by lottery officials straight after the draw, she was overcome with emotion when she heard that she had suddenly become a multimillionaire.
“Are you joking?” she said in disbelief. “Are you sure about this? Oh my god, this is insane. Thank you. I’m trying to compose myself. I feel like this has to be some kind of joke. It’s my husband who usually buys the tickets. There’s no way he’s going to believe me. This is amazing.”
The woman, who purchased the ticket online, has decided to remain anonymous. She is now looking forward to sharing the money with family members and living life to the full.
“I’ve never thought about what I’d do with $60 million,” she admitted. “We will be able to pay off all our debts, help our parents out and all our siblings. We will be able to buy a house. Hopefully, when we can travel again, we will be able to take our whole family somewhere overseas.
“This is very overwhelming. I’m shaking like a leaf. This is crazy.”
Big Week for Winners
It has been a week for big winners, after a woman from Gippsland in Victoria scooped $20 million in Tuesday night’s Oz Lotto draw. She said she was planning to have a meal out at the pub with her family to celebrate.
The Powerball jackpot had most recently been won on 13 August by a player from New South Wales who landed $10 million. There have now been nine Powerball winners in 2020 - four from New South Wales, three from Queensland and two from Victoria.
The jackpot for the next draw on Thursday 24 September will be worth $3 million, while there are also big prizes to play for throughout the week in Monday, Wednesday and Saturday Lotto, plus Set for LIfe.
