Sydney Man Wins Monday Lotto Jackpot Twice In One Draw

A man from Parramatta in Sydney has hailed a ‘very happy accident’ after it was revealed that two of the six winning tickets in the latest Monday Lotto draw belonged to him. He played the same numbers twice without realising and was stunned to discover that he had won a total of $1.3 million.
The lucky player, who has decided to remain anonymous, matched the numbers 2, 9, 17, 19, 22 and 36 on Monday 21 October. A jackpot of $4 million was split between six winning entries, with each share worth $666,666. Two of those shares went to the same man, who was in a state of shock when he spoke to an official from NSW Lotteries the next day.
“You have no idea how this has helped my family,” he said. “I’ll be able to pay off my mortgage and I’m able to help my kids. It’s already been spent mate, but all wisely I can assure you. It’s so much appreciated.”
A Statistical Strategy
Asked about how he had come to play the same numbers twice, the winner admitted it had not been intentional. He had developed a system based on statistics - mixing the most common and least common numbers - to pick lines. However, as he was playing an 18-game entry, he inadvertently made two of them the same, which ended up giving him twice as much reason to celebrate.
“I’ve been buying lottery tickets for a while now,” he said. “You can’t dream if you don’t have a ticket. So I buy a ticket. I used to just buy QuickPick tickets at random. But then I sat down and saw what numbers were picked out most frequently and least frequently, and just used combinations of those.
“But it wasn’t deliberate that I had two rows of the same numbers. It was just that I had to mark another line on the ticket, so it’s a very happy accident!”
The winning ticket was purchased at Parramatta CBD Newsagency, Shop 16, Mayfair Mall, 272-276 Church Street, Parramatta. The owner of the newsagency, William Ho, was delighted that his store had sold its first jackpot-winning entries.
He said: “We’ve been waiting for a long, long time. We’ve been here for 15 years and we’ve never sold a division one. I was very happy this morning when I saw we had sold not one but two division one wins. It’s such good news. We wish our customer all the best with their double prize.”
Maximum First Division Prize Fund
The jackpot in Monday Lotto is $1 million per winning ticket. However, there is a maximum First Division payout of $4 million for a single draw, so this prize has to be shared between all the winners when there are more than four players that match all the numbers.
As he had bought two winning entries, the Sydney man received double the amount of the other four winners. If he had just purchased one winning ticket and there had been five winners in total, everyone would have been paid $800,000.
