Queensland Couple Match Record with Australia Powerball Win

Last Updated: Monday 11th January 2016, 10:47 am

A husband and wife from Hervey Bay have equalled the record for the biggest-ever lottery win on a single ticket in Australia after scooping the Powerball jackpot of $70 million on Thursday 7th January. The Queensland grandparents have now set their sights on a new car and lots of travelling after matching all six main numbers plus the Powerball in the latest draw.

The winning numbers were 4, 14, 18, 20, 23 and 34 with Powerball 18. There were over 1.3 million prize winners on the night, but the glory went to the couple who told Tatts Lotteries that ‘the best thing we’ve ever won is the old chook raffle’. Visit the Australia Lottery Results for more information, including a full prize breakdown.

The lucky winners have decided to remain anonymous, but have revealed that they will give money to help charitable causes and their family before enjoying themselves. “We haven’t done much travel in our lives, but now we’re off,” said the husband. “There’s also a dream car on the horizon which was always out of reach until now.” The woman also declared that it had been her New Year’s resolution to ‘bring more positivity’ into her life, and the lucky couple have now gone down in Australian lottery history.

The latest winners have matched the $70 million won by a single ticket on Oz Lotto back in 2013, and are the biggest single winners ever of a Powerball prize. The record Powerball jackpot still stands at $80 million, but that was split between two winning ticket holders in July 2009.

The Powerball jackpot will revert to $3 million for the next draw on Thursday night, and tickets can be purchased from authorised retailers in Australia or online from wherever you are in the world. It could just be that the latest record-equalling win sparks a rush of big winners, allowing more players to fulfil their dreams. Best of luck!
