Powerball Jackpot Hits $80 Million

Last Updated: Thursday 4 July 2019, 14:52 pm

For the second time in the space of a couple of weeks, a jackpot of $80 million will be put up for grabs to inspire the dreams of Australian National Lottery players. This time it is on Powerball, making it one of the biggest draws in the history of the game.

How The Jackpot Grew So Large

The Powerball jackpot was last won on 16th May, when a father from Ballarat pocketed $8 million. Seven rollovers have followed, including the most recent draw on 4th July when no tickets were able to secure the $60 million division one prize.

It was estimated that around a quarter of Australian adults would enter the $60 million draw, and there were over 1.1 million prizes given away on a thrilling night, including nine players in the second prize division who won $65,674 each.

With even more tickets expected to be sold for next Thursday’s draw, it could be that one of Powerball’s largest prizes will be won. “The only time Powerball players scored division one in an $80 million draw was in 2009 when two players, a Melbourne man and a woman from Sydney, walked away with $40 million each,” said Bronwyn Spencer, a spokesperson for The Lott.

A $100 million jackpot was also split between two winning tickets in August 2018, before a woman from Sydney broke the record in January of this year when she landed $107 million. One more rollover and that high mark could be under threat.

Spencer said: “With a mind-blowing $80 million on offer next Thursday, it will be interesting to see if one person takes it all and in doing so sets a new Powerball record for the game’s second-biggest individual division one prize. The only way to find out is to get an entry. We encourage all players to get in early, avoid the rush and grab their ticket for a chance to become a multi-millionaire!”

Big Jackpots Coming Thick and Fast

Big jackpots have become increasingly common on Powerball since a number of changes were made to the game in April 2018. You previously had to pick six main numbers from 1 to 40, whereas you now have to select seven from 1 to 35. As the odds of winning the jackpot have lengthened, it has been given away less frequently, although the addition of a new prize division has helped to improve your overall chances of winning an award.

The latest huge jackpot comes just weeks after $80 million was offered on Oz Lotto. Two players, both from Queensland, matched all the numbers on Tuesday 25th June to scoop $40 million each.

The lottery draws come thick and fast throughout the week, with Monday, Wednesday and Saturday Lotto draws in addition to Oz Lotto and Powerball. Set For Life is also played every day of the week, offering a top prize of $20,000 a month for 20 years. Check the latest results to see the winning numbers from all the different games and find out if you are due a prize, perhaps even the $80 million Powerball jackpot.
