A man from Newcastle in New South Wales has vowed to make up for lost time and help out his children and grandchildren, after finding out that he won a Saturday Lotto prize of over $1 million in a draw which took place over a year ago.
The lucky ticket holder was one of four First Division winners on Saturday 9th January 2016, but had no idea about his $1,020,496 windfall until he was cleaning out his car over the weekend and stumbled upon an old entry at the bottom of some shopping bags. He checked the ticket online and was stunned to discover his success.
He told lottery officials: “I’m not worried that I could have had the money a year ago – at least I’ve got it now. It might have remained anonymous until the year 3900! There’s a few people who are going to benefit from this. I want to help the kids with their house payments and the grandkids with their education.”
The winning ticket was bought at Nextra Marketown Newsagency in Marketown Shopping Centre, and store owner Cheryl Tuckerman was delighted the winner has now come forward. She said: “You wouldn’t believe how many customers we’ve had coming in during the past year asking whether the winner had been found. We’re excited to be able to tell them that now it has!”
