A man from Melbourne won $5 million in Tuesday’s Oz Lotto draw and found out about it after his workout the next morning. The lucky ticket holder was the only one to hit all seven winning numbers in the 18 February draw to win the Division 1 prize of $5,018,954.36.
Lottery officials made contact with the winner the morning after the draw and it turned out he was completely unaware of the win.
“It’s all just a little surreal. Oh man! This is amazing,” the winner said. “I’m just home from the gym and I’m about to head to work. Clearly, I’m going to be running late today. “I’m shaking and I’ve sworn about 20 times already. Oh my god!
“I’ll need to calm down a bit,” he added.
The winner chose to remain anonymous but it was revealed that it was a man in his 30s from the neighbourhood of South Yarra in Melbourne. He played a System 8 entry so in addition to the Division 1 prize he also hit seven Division 3 and four Division 7 prizes, adding another $32,930 to his total winnings.
Aside from paying off his mortgage, the winner said he would have to think about what to spend the money on, but did say that he may no longer have to fly economy.
“I don’t think my day will get any better after this,” he added. “I’ll be waiting patiently for that money to land in my account!
The winning Oz Lotto numbers from draw 1357 on Tuesday 18 February were 9, 11, 13, 16, 37, 39, and 43, with the supplementary numbers 29 and 31. The $5 million jackpot had rolled over once from the previous draw on 11 February. Go to the Oz Lotto Results page to see a full prize breakdown from draw 1357.
Oz Lotto jackpots won in Victoria
The Oz Lotto jackpot has been won four times so far this year and three of the winners bought their tickets in Victoria. The first jackpot of 2020 was hit in draw 1352 on 14 January, when two ticket holders shared a $10.4 million prize. One of the winning tickets belonged to a Queenslander who was holidaying in south Victoria.
“I’m down in Melbourne on holiday while I visit family,” the Sunshine Coast grandmother told lottery officials. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would win Oz Lotto and become a multi-millionaire while I was here.”
“I just don’t think I am absorbing the news that I am a multi-millionaire. I think I’ll be in shock for weeks!”
That win was followed by another three weeks later, when a woman from Kilmore hit a $10 million jackpot in draw 1355 on 4 February. The winning entry was bought as part of a nine-game QuickPick ticket.
Talking about how she would spend the money, the winner, who also remained anonymous, said: “I’ll help my kids out and my family but all I really want is a nice house. I’ve got a good car, but the service is overdue on that one. I won’t have to worry about that or any other bills now though!”
The Oz Lotto jackpot resets to its starting value of $2 million for next week’s draw. You can play via any lottery retailer in Australia or choose your numbers online.
