Melbourne Couple Win $60 Million Powerball Jackpot

A couple from South Melbourne have become Victoria’s second-biggest lottery winners of all time after landing a Powerball jackpot of $60 million in the latest draw. It comes after a ‘horrible’ year for the husband and wife and has given them lots to look forward to for the rest of their lives.
It only took four draws without a winner for the Division 1 prize to grow to $60 million, and one lucky ticket matched all the numbers - 2, 7, 11, 17, 27, 28 and 30, plus the Powerball of 11 - on Thursday 21 October.
The ticket was bought at Market Lotto & News, Stall 121-122, South Melbourne Market, a stall which had already remarkably sold two Saturday Lotto Division 1-winning entries in previous years.
The winners discovered their good fortune just after the draw took place and spoke to lottery officials later in the afternoon. The news had not yet sunk in at that point, but they were in a joyous mood.
“It’s fantastic news,” said the man. “I found out last night while I was watching TV with my wife. We knew straight after the draw that we had won. We were screaming and crying.
“It was just disbelief. It was amazing. We’ve just been trying to calm down ever since. I am feeling amazing, we both are. It has been a very tough year for us – really horrible. But this changes everything.
“It’s a dream come true. We’ve been fantasising about this moment and now it’s here and we’re multi-millionaires. This changes everything for us. We feel very, very grateful.
“I love it! This feels like a dream. Today we will celebrate by getting some chocolate, flowers and coffee, and we’ll go out for a beautiful dinner tonight.”
The only time that a larger lottery prize has been paid out in Victoria came earlier this year, when a man from North Melbourne won $80 million in August. And the latest winners have already got plans for what they will do with the money.
“I want to pay off the home loan and some debts we have,” he said. “We’re looking at retiring, and of course we’ll help the kids. And we’ll have some good holidays, both interstate and overseas.
“We’ll definitely buy a new car and we’d love to eventually buy a new house. This is going to make things so much easier. It’s life-changing!”
The Powerball jackpot will start again at $3 million in the next draw. Pick up your entries now and remember to check the results as soon as they are available.
