A man from Ipswich in Queensland has revealed that he can’t wrap his head around the fact that he has just become $9.9 million richer, but luckily he and his wife had already made a plan for what to do if they ever won the Powerball jackpot.
The couple matched all the numbers - 1, 8, 9, 22, 30, 31 and 32, plus the Powerball of 9 - in draw no. 1322 on Thursday 16 September. They were the only winners across the whole of Australia, and the husband was ecstatic when he found out the news.
“After all these years, we have finally won,” he said. “It is absolutely incredible. We’ve gone from being real battlers to having money. I can’t wrap my head around it. We never expected to win this much. It will change our lives in such a massive way. I am honestly really lost for words. I can hardly string a sentence together.”
Having played the lottery regularly for years, the Queenslander has had a lot of time to think about what he might do with a big win. He is now looking forward to putting the money to good use, as well as reducing his work hours.
He said: “We will finally be able to put into action the plan my wife and I have always had should we one day win the lottery. We will pay off the mortgage to begin with and be debt-free. I will work part time instead of full time.
“I have always wanted to make some smart investments and of course, help our children. I will be able to pay off their mortgages in full. And when we can, we will travel around the country. It will make a big change. The reality of it all hasn’t really sunk in.”
The lucky winner purchased his 12-game Quick Pick at Foote’s Pharmacy Leichhardt, Shop 4-5, 9 Old Toowoomba Road, Leichhardt. It was the first time the outlet had sold a Division 1 winning ticket.
Store owner John McGraw said: “This has really made our day. It couldn’t have gone to a better person. It’s amazing knowing this incredible prize has gone to one of our local and regular customers.
“It is such exciting news not just for us, but for the entire community. It’s all everyone is talking about. There is such a buzz. It is a massive boost for the area. Congratulations to him. We really hope he enjoys his prize.”
The Powerball jackpot has now been won twice in the last three draws, following on from a $20 million windfall for a player from the Australian Capital territory on 2 September. Keep up to date with the latest Powerball Results straight after they take place every Thursday.
