Great-Grandmother To Share Saturday Lotto Superdraw Winnings

Last Updated: Wednesday 13 May 2020, 15:12 pm

A great-grandmother from South Australia has promised to spread her newfound wealth around all generations of her family after winning the Saturday Lotto Superdraw.

In Superdraws, the jackpot is increased from its standard value of $4 million to $20 million. There were 11 winning tickets in the latest big event on 9 May - four from Victoria, three from New South Wales, two from Western Australia, and one each from South Australia and Queensland. They all matched the numbers 7, 21, 22, 35, 38 and 39 to pocket more than $1.8 million each.

The ticket bought in South Australia belonged to a woman from Gawler, Barossa. She had not initially realised quite how fortunate she had been, having miscalculated when she checked her numbers straight after the draw.

She recalled: “My partner had just checked his ticket and told me he hadn’t won anything, so I thought I’d better check mine. We checked the numbers and I crossed off five. I said to my partner ‘I missed it by just one number’. Thankfully, I decided to check it again and that’s when I saw I had all six numbers. It’s a very surreal feeling but amazing.”

The winner, who has decided to remain anonymous, celebrated with a few drinks of champagne at home. Asked about the numbers she had played, she revealed that she had been sticking with them for a long time.

“I’ve been playing these numbers for about 20 years,” she explained. “I picked them at random all those years ago and now they’ve finally come up. I’ll never forget these numbers now.”

Looking ahead to the future, the winner is excited about sharing the money with all of her loved ones. She said it had been a special moment when she broke the news to her family.

“I’m going to buy a house for me and my partner and then I’m going to share it with my family,” she said. “I’ve got children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren so they will all get some money to help them out.

“When I told them all I had won, they didn’t believe me. Once they realised it was true, we all started crying we were so happy. It was a great way to spend Mother’s Day.”

The winning ticket was bought at Northern News, Shop 24, Gawler Central Shopping Centre, 1 Cowan Street, Gawler.

Following the second Superdraw of the year on Saturday, the jackpot for the next draw this weekend will reset to $4 million. The biggest jackpot now on offer in Australia is the $15 million up for grabs in Oz Lotto.
