Bendigo Man Wins $30 Million Powerball Prize on ‘Second-Best Day of Life’

A man from Bendigo is looking forward to buying his own house and giving up his job after winning the First Division prize in Thursday night’s Powerball draw. The jackpot was worth $30 million after four consecutive weeks without a winner, and only one ticket matched the full winning line.
The numbers drawn were 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 33, plus Powerball 4. There were over 786,000 prizes given away altogether, but the lucky player who snapped up the jackpot did not have any idea at first and went to work the next day as normal.
It was his wife who discovered that they had won, before he received confirmation from lottery officials on the phone and spoke about how it was all sinking in. He said: “I’ve just knocked off work and come home. My wife had just checked the ticket online and came screaming out the door. I said ‘don’t get your hopes up’, but I guess it’s true!”
As a blue-collar worker, the winner said he had never been a rich man and the money would make a huge difference to his family. “Other than my wedding day, this is the best day of my life,” he added.
Plans for the Future
The man, in his 50s, has been a regular player for years and bought his winning ticket online. He has decided to stay anonymous, and now wants to enjoy a bright future with his loved ones. He is not sure exactly what he will do with such a large payout, but he has a couple of ideas.
“The most I’ve ever won is $90 so I’ve never really thought of myself as a lucky man – only in life with my beautiful family - but now I guess I am,” he said. “I might retire and go round Australia. We’ll have to buy a new car too. I’ve never owned a new car.
“We rent so I’d love to own my own house. I was going to buy a house with my super when I retired, but now I can finally buy my first home.
Revenues on the Rise
Powerball is drawn every Thursday night and has started to offer big jackpots on a more regular basis since a number of changes were made to the game last April. There have already been two First Division prizes of more than $100 million in the past nine months – one in August 2018 and another in January 2019.
The number of winners in Powerball and Oz Lotto has gone up between 55 and 75 percent. Tabcorp chief executive David Attenborough said: “Powerball and Oz Lotto are our two jackpot games and in the first 10 months of this financial year they have already recorded 39 large jackpots of $15 million-plus. This is around the number of jackpots we would typically expect in a full year.
“Our results in the current year are also benefiting from some favourable jackpot sequences - $45 million of revenue benefit in the first half, and at least another $45 million in the second half.”
The Powerball jackpot for next week’s draw will reset to $3 million, but you can also enjoy other games through the week such as Saturday Lotto, Monday Lotto, Wednesday Lotto and Oz Lotto.
