One of the largest Powerball jackpots in history has been snapped up by a syndicate of 55 women from Beldon near Perth. The $80 million win sets a new record for the largest amount ever paid out in Western Australia.

It was the only Division One-winning ticket for the draw on Thursday 2 December, after approximately one in four Australian adults had purchased a ticket. The numbers selected were 4, 5, 19, 26, 27, 30 and 33, with a Powerball of 8.

More than 2.5 million other prizes were won across the other eight divisions. Go to the Powerball Results page to see all the dividends.

    Winning Syndicate

The winning ticket was not registered on lottery operator LotteryWest’s Player Registration Service, but it was quickly revealed that it belonged to a syndicate.

The women are from Curves - a ladies-only gym - and they each put in $5 for a share in a Slikpik 50 entry. The ticket was bought from Beaumaris News and Post in Ocean Reef and was organised by a woman in her 50s who could not resist a shot at the jackpot.

She said: “Since COVID-19 the gym has been really struggling, and a lot of the ladies at the gym are real Aussie battlers and come here as an outlet. We’re a real community and this is going to be life-changing for every single one of us. The future is looking so bright.”

A number of the women were out together for a pre-Christmas dinner when they discovered the news, and they can now all look forward to becoming millionaires.

“One of our husbands called to tell us we had won and the minute we found out it was pandemonium,” said the syndicate manager. “I called over to the waiter and asked for their finest bottle of champagne.

“Christmas this year is going to be bigger, brighter and better than ever - it will be a very special time for all of us.”

Jeremy Hubble, acting CEO of LotteryWest, congratulated the winners on grabbing the biggest lottery prize ever seen in Western Australia.

He said: “It’s always incredible to meet our winners and to meet such a large group of syndicate winners, who can all share in the magic and joy, is just wonderful. This record-breaking win for WA shares the title of third highest on a national level.”

The next Powerball jackpot will be worth $3 million, while there are also chances to win big throughout the week. Take a look at the latest results to see the winning numbers from all the national draws.
