A husband and wife from Dromana have claimed the $80 million Powerball jackpot from the draw on Thursday 9 July, becoming the biggest lottery winners in Victoria’s history.

The winning Powerball numbers were 2, 21, 26, 28, 31, 32 and 33, plus Powerball 12. Only one entry from across Australia matched all the numbers, and the identity of the lucky ticket holder was initially shrouded in mystery as it was not a registered player.

As officials had no way to contact the winner, they had to wait for someone to come forward. That turned out to be a family from the Mornington Peninsula, who bought their entry at Dromana Authorised Newsagency, 177 Point Nepean Road, Dromana.

Speaking to a representative of lottery operator The Lott, the woman said it still felt like a dream. The couple do not play every week, but enjoy trying to win the Powerball jackpot from time to time.

Having initially forgotten to check their numbers straight after the draw, they finally got round to it a couple of days later and have not wanted to let the ticket out of their sight since discovering how much it was worth.

Recalling her emotions, the woman said: “We were stunned, excited, in disbelief, surreal, just everything. I won’t forget that moment. I’ve been safeguarding that ticket ever since. The ticket came to bed with me last night.”

The winners are looking forward to a bright future and making the most of their prize, but they will not get carried away and are keeping a sense of perspective amid the coronavirus crisis.

“We’re happy, excited and shocked. We’re throwing ideas all over the place and I’m just thinking ‘let’s wait until we see the money in the bank account’,” said the woman. “I really thought I would be waking up from a dream about now.

“The main thing at the moment is getting through what we’re all going through. Our health is really important, and we want to concentrate on getting through this period.

“When it passes, we’ll be ready to enjoy the prize. It gives us enormous peace of mind and freedom. There’s lots to worry about at the moment, but we don’t need to worry about money any more.”

    Big Powerball Jackpots

Thursday’s jackpot was one of the largest to have ever been seen in Powerball - and broke a record for the biggest lottery win in Victoria. Paul Fancett, owner of the newsagency that sold the winning ticket, was delighted to be part of the historic moment.

He said: “We’ve never had a win as big as this. Our previous largest win was $1 million, so this certainly blows that out of the water. We are absolutely thrilled for our customer. Enjoy that prize.”

The largest Powerball prize of all time was the $150 million that was split between three winners in September 2019. The biggest jackpot won on a single ticket has been $107 million.

The jackpot for the next Powerball draw will be worth $5 million. Choose your numbers online or from a newsagency to give yourself a chance of winning.
