Friends Win $1.6 Million Each With Identical Saturday Lotto Tickets

A couple of friends from Goolwa in South Australia have revealed how they surprised each other by both buying winning tickets for the Saturday Lotto Superdraw on 2 November. They are now looking forward to giving up work together and enjoying a long retirement.
They have been playing the lottery together for years, playing the same numbers every week and taking it in turns to purchase tickets. However, there was a mix-up before the latest draw when they both thought it was their turn and both purchased entries.
Their tickets both matched the winning numbers 1, 2, 10, 12, 21 and 42 - landing them both a share of the $20 million jackpot. There were 12 winners in total, so that left both friends with a payout of $1.6 million.
Asked how it felt to have such a stroke of luck, one of the friends told an SA Lotteries official: “It’s an absolute beauty, isn’t it? It’s incredible that the week we both end up with a ticket, thanks to a mistake, is the week our numbers are drawn. And if you knew the two of us, the more likely scenario is that the week our numbers are pulled out of the barrel is the week we’d both forget to buy a ticket!”
The second winner was similarly delighted, hailing it as ‘the greatest stuff up in the world’. Speaking about the moment when they realised what had happened, he said: “My mate called me at the crack of dawn saying ‘I’ve got some news for you. I thought he was lying of course when he said we’d won division one. Then I told him ‘well I’ve got some even better news for you. I put the Lotto on as well, thinking it was my week.”
Winners Planning To Travel
Both men have struggled to come to terms with the big win, describing it as a ‘surreal’ event that has left them both ‘in such a daze’. However, they have already started making plans for the future and cannot wait to quit the job which they do together. “What a day that will be,” laughed one of the winners.
The other player said: “Of course we’ve always been willing to share our division one prize but now we get one each. I love to travel so I’m certainly going to do plenty of that. Maybe we’ll take a holiday together to celebrate! We’ll be enjoying every minute of this.”
One of the winning tickets was sold at Mount Barker Central Newsagency, Shop 17, Mount Barker Central, McLaren Street, Mount Barker, while the other was sold at Old Town Reynella Newsagency, Shop 11, Old Town Reynella Shopping Cent, 211-225 Old South Road, Reynella. Both winners have decided to stay anonymous.
The jackpot will reset to $4 million for the next Saturday Lotto draw, while there are a host of other big prizes to win throughout the week. Powerball currently offers the largest prize of any game in Australia after rolling over to $30 million. Go to the Lottery Results page to find the winning numbers after every draw.
